DocSpring vs PlatoForms
Compare team-managed PDF intake forms with forms and Data Requests your application controls.
Our take
PlatoForms is a forms product first. It turns a PDF into an online form, lets a team publish it, invite people by email, route it through workflow participants, collect signatures with a certificate, and deliver the result to Drive or Dropbox. Its plans are cheap, starting at $10 a month billed annually, and HIPAA with a BAA is included from the Silver plan. For a small team running intake without developers, that is a good deal.
It is a weaker fit as an API. There is no HTML template, no batch, no merge, synchronous generation is marked as not recommended, API calls are capped per plan, and data is US-only with SOC 2 still on the roadmap. DocSpring is built the other way around, as an API with forms attached. Fill from JSON at volume, embed the field editor and forms in your product, and choose US or EU hosting with SOC 2 Type II done. Choose PlatoForms if your ops team will own the forms. Choose DocSpring if your application will.
Online forms and PDF intake
PlatoForms turns PDFs into online forms and supports workflows that collect information from people. Its Master Forms can populate several PDFs from one set of answers. DocSpring also creates hosted or embedded forms from PDF fields, with an API for filling documents from data your application already has.
Both are relevant to a customer application form. PlatoForms is worth a close look when your team wants to configure intake and workflow steps in a form product. DocSpring fits a product that needs to own the surrounding experience, including authentication and notifications.
Choose DocSpring for forms within your product
Your app supplies some or all of the data, controls who can access each document, and embeds the remaining fields or signing step. The same templates can be filled entirely through API calls at any volume.
Choose PlatoForms for intake managed by your team
Your team wants to publish forms, invite people by email, collect responses, and configure multi-step workflows without writing code. Master Forms are useful when one set of answers must populate several PDFs.

| API integration | ||
| Synchronous generation | Yes Use sync.api.docspring.com to receive submission JSON and a PDF download URL in one request. | Conditions apply: Not recommended The submit endpoint accepts a sync flag to wait for the PDF, which the API docs mark as not recommended for production. |
| Asynchronous generation | Yes Send wait=false to return immediately. Receive a webhook or check the submission status later. | Yes Submissions return immediately and the PDF is generated in the background, then delivered by webhook. |
| Webhooks | Yes Receive notifications about PDF generation and Data Request events. | Yes Per-form webhooks managed through the API post the submission data and generated PDF. |
| Batch PDF generation | Yes Generate up to 50 PDFs in a request with different templates and data. | No One PDF per API submission. Bulk CSV invitations send prefilled forms to people rather than generating PDFs. |

| US and EU hosting | Yes Choose the US or EU service region. | No All data is hosted on AWS in the United States. No EU region. |
| Self-hosting | Yes: Enterprise Self-hosted enterprise licenses are available. | No Hosted service only. |
"Not published" means the vendor's public materials do not say either way, usually because it is handled on request. A dedicated integration is different from connecting an API through a generic HTTP action. Plan requirements and product boundaries are noted in the cells.
Prefill an application, then let the customer finish it
Your CRM already knows the customer's name and email. The customer needs to supply the missing answers and sign without typing the same details again.
In DocSpring
Upload the application PDF and map the fields. Submit the known values and create Data Requests for the fields the customer must complete.
Authenticate the customer in your app, request a one-time form token, and embed the form or send its link. Your app sends notifications and records the authentication details used for the signing audit trail.
In PlatoForms
Create an online form from the PDF and map its answers to the document. Use the prefill invitation to supply the known customer values, and PlatoForms emails the customer a link.
Configure any subsequent workflow participants and delivery integrations. If several PDFs share the same intake data, use a Master Form instead of asking the customer to complete several separate forms.
Start by testing PDF filling in DocSpring
This request fills the known name and email fields. Add Data Requests when you are ready to collect the remaining fields or a signature.

Set the environment variables to your template ID and test API credentials. Accounts in our EU region send requests to sync.api-eu.docspring.com instead. The response includes a download URL for a watermarked PDF. See the request and response guide.
Test the form on a phone, resume an unfinished application, and send it through every approval step. Compare the customer experience and the staff workflow as well as the final PDF.
Cheap per month, capped per form and per API call
DocSpring
The Starter plan is $49 per month for 50 live PDFs, then 25c per additional PDF. Larger plans lower the per-PDF price. Every plan includes unlimited templates, users, and watermarked test PDFs, and there is a free trial with no card required.
See all DocSpring plansPlatoForms
PlatoForms has a free plan with 1 live form and 100 submissions a month and no API access. Bronze is $10 a month for 2 live forms, 1,000 submissions, and 5,000 API calls, and adds e-signatures and workflows. Silver is $30 for 20 forms, 10,000 submissions, 50,000 API calls, and HIPAA with a BAA. Gold is $80 for 100 forms. These are annual-billing prices; paying month to month costs $12, $36, and $98.
There is no overage. Exceeding a limit means moving up a tier, and every API call counts, including fetching and downloading, not only submissions.
PlatoForms pricing pageA team with 25 published application forms needs Gold at $80 a month billed annually for the form count alone, even at modest volume. DocSpring's Starter plan is $49 per month with unlimited templates, and API calls are not metered, only generated PDFs. If you need HIPAA, PlatoForms includes the BAA from Silver; DocSpring includes it on standard plans too.
Moving PlatoForms workflows to DocSpring
Keep the original PDFs, field definitions, conditional rules, and example responses. Recreate the PDF fields in DocSpring, then map the old answer keys to the new schema. Test the final layout and the form validation separately.
Rebuild prefill and invitation flows using submissions and Data Requests. PlatoForms sends the invitation emails; with DocSpring your application sends them and controls participant access.
For Master Forms or workflows that populate several PDFs, send the same data to several templates in a batch and combine the files when appropriate. Preserve historical submissions and signed records before retiring the old forms.
Questions about PlatoForms alternatives
Can DocSpring collect data without a form I build myself?
Yes. It generates a web form from PDF template fields or shows a visual form over the PDF. Forms can be hosted or embedded. Your application controls the surrounding customer process when using Data Requests.
Can one set of answers fill several PDFs?
DocSpring can send the same data to several templates in a batch request and combine the outputs. PlatoForms offers Master Forms for configuring this as a form workflow. Compare who should maintain that mapping.
Does PlatoForms have SOC 2 or EU hosting?
Not yet. Its trust page lists SOC 2 Type II as on the roadmap, and data is hosted in the United States only. DocSpring has completed a SOC 2 Type II audit and offers US or EU hosting.
